Biography: Jillian Riley

Jillian has been working in art related professions for many years but it is the love of ceramics which captured her heart and has allowed the pulling together of all her creative skills.

Drawing inspiration from her love of ravens, magpies,an interest in mythology and a passion for things that are a little on the dark side, she has created a collection of bottles with a twist.

Taking old poison and scientific bottles, Jillian makes molds and slip casts them in parian clay. They then are decorated with oxides and her own illustrations of bugs, birds, animals and plant forms. Using reclaimed woods she turn stoppers which support individually hand sculpted porcelain birds. Each piece is then finished with either sterling silver, copper or re-purposed items which makes every one unique.

She also has a love of the cheeky side of life, birds and animals are a wonderful inspiration for creating appealing ‘characters’ who just come to life with conversation. She hand-sculpts each bird or animal so whether it’s two dodos wondering why everyone thinks they are extinct or two hens making a poor cockerel feel ‘hen pecked’ , they all have a tale to tell. As each story unfolds she then decides how they should be mounted which means each piece is unique.
